Our first stop was at the Spencer Brownstone Gallery on 170-A Suffolk Street, and we met gallery director Jae Cho. Jae showed us the current exhibit by Ariel Orozco called Have a seat and let me tell you, which consisted of 4 canvases with automated lights and two sculptures of street lamps communicating in morse code. After asking Jae questions about his academic journey, professional life, and the inner workings of the gallery, we visited the Bureau Gallery on 178 Norfolk Street and spoke with gallery director Weston Lowe. Weston gave us a tour of the current exhibition by Patricia Trieb titled Arm Measures, featuring large paintings created with large brushstrokes of color dynamic forms as a composition. Weston provided great insight to his role as gallery director, the process of the gallery, and other topics concerning the Bureau Gallery.

Both Jae and Weston spoke about how they find artists or come into contact with artists to represent in their galleries and it helped me better understand how the art world is truly reliant on networking. Jae said that it wasn’t normal, and possibly frowned upon, as an artist to go to a gallery and show them your portfolio, asking to be represented, and that it usually was a gallery to artist interaction, not the other way around. Weston mentioned that sometimes he gets into contact with artists online or by reference. I was especially surprised to know that it’s frowned upon for artists to contact galleries; I guess I had never really considered how the art world is so dependent on referrals and networking.

In all of the interviews we’ve had so far, a common thread has been that the interviewee’s major in undergrad was pretty general, such as studio art, art history, etc., and they either became more focused in their graduate program, or just began working for an internship or a lower level job in an art organization. By working their way up, they were able to gain knowledge about their field that has been commonly said “not adequately taught in school programs”. Jae explained to us that through working at entry-level jobs and internships and taking on initiative and learning how to do things himself, he has worked his way up to becoming a gallery director. Weston told us how his focus in undergrad was actually sculpture, and he was not NY based either, but worked his way over to where he is now. These visits have taught me that a majority of the art world is just learning as you go, remaining open to possibilities, and networking.

[3

post-101","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-other","entry
["GET
